INTERVIEW WITH OTTO VAN DEN TOORN

1.What inspired you to be a photographer?

“Well, that was honestly by accident. I became very lonely as a dj producer who was all by himself in a studio. Then I started photographing models I was friends with. Then I thought: ohhh I want to do this!!”

2.What’s your biggest dream in life?

“To make an excistence from my creativity. And with all the insecurities that brings with it, it’s already working for quite some time now. First as a dj, then as a componist and now as a photographer.”

3.What skills are necessary for you for a successfull photographer?

“I think it’s a combination of skills, personality and what your services cost. A rude person who’s good in his work doesn’t come far. But someone nice that doesn’t have any skills doesn’t come far eather. You need a balance. And do you know what you absolutely need to have? A good stamina! You really have to want this otherwise you are not putting effort and time in it.”

4.By what things do you get energy en inspiration in life?

“By working with new teams for example. Young people with drive and an idea. Like our last shoot together! JHaving true admiration and wonder for the things you can do and do. Look at beautiful work of others for inspiration. Sometimes it’s intimidating but it’s a good motive to make things too. Personally, the rest that prevails the nature also does me very well.”

5.How would you describe your personal photography style?

“Hmmm, that’s such a tough one. Preferably I would do high-fashion photoshoots, but I know that’s not 100% in my bones. And maybe my personality is not build for that scene. Would stylish fashionable and reasonably polished answer the question?”

6.What are the most fun sides of your job?

“That you meet so many fun and interesting people. You also visit places where you wouldn’t go that quickly yourself. And to create beautiful things. That’s what really makes me happy.”

7.What does creativity mean to you?

“Something that drives everything. Some kind of force that makes everything possible. When it flows, it turns into such a rush. Love it.”

8.What are your biggest strengths and weaknesses?

“My weakness: Situations with conflict are my enemies. I want everyone to be happy, that’s my biggest strength. But sometimes you avoid tough situations. My biggest strength is maybe to have the urge to really create and direct something with others and to help other people. I hope customers feel that genuine involvement. That also makes the job way more fun for me as well.”

9.What would you do if you could not fail in anything?

“Become father after all? That’s a deep one.. And be director of beautiful filming- video’s.”

10.What does success mean to you?

“I’m quite sensitive for it. The photo’s I make have to stand for ‘something’ or have an expression. I wouldn’t make them if it was only my hobby. The same happened with being a dj and a producer. And people have to share their opinion and in the best situation they have to absolutely love my work. The moments they don’t can be hell, but the moments of success can be an addicting rush. I want that rush. The feeling you get when you succeed I want maybe even more than that you ‘matter’ for another reason. A pure trick of my ego ofcourse. Because what if you found out you did matter?”
